PiLot Studio is a multi-provider AI coding assistant for VS Code. It runs the Pi coding agent with your own API keys — no proxy in the middle, no subscription, no vendor lock-in. Switch models mid-session with quick cycling, or go fully local with Ollama.

Bring your own keys — or bring no keys at all

API keys are managed by the Pi coding agent on your machine, never sent to us. PiLot Studio adds a GUI on top: provider setup with OAuth login for supported providers, favorite models that persist across restarts, custom OpenAI-compatible endpoints added in two clicks, and per-model thinking levels.

PI's image and classifier models also appear in the Providers panel, labeled by availability (classifier-only providers are marked), while chat pickers stay chat-only. Refresh the catalog offline by default, or use Refresh (online) for PI's personalized model catalog.

Local models in VS Code

Point Pi at Ollama and the same GUI drives a fully local AI coding agent — nothing leaves your machine. Pair it with PiLot's Light Mode (skills, extensions, and context files off; tools limited to read/bash/edit/write) and whisper.cpp dictation that already runs offline, and you have a privacy-focused AI coding assistant that works on a plane.

Why BYOK matters for a coding agent

  • Cost control — pay your provider directly for what you use; heavy users save versus flat-rate seats.
  • Privacy — conversations stay between you and your provider (or on-device).
  • Freedom — mix Claude for architecture, GPT for quick fixes, a local model for sensitive repos.
  • No middleman — PiLot Studio is open source; there is no server of ours to trust.

Prompt-cache warming is another cost lever: choose PI's Streaming, Idle, or Off mode in Preferences → Agent Behavior, and the change applies to the live session.
